The Learning Health System (LHS) is a rapidly evolving approach for improving the outcomes of individuals, populations, the health care team and health care organizations. LHS are organizations in which knowledge-generation processes are embedded in daily practice to continuously improve care.

Practice to Data

In a learning health system, internal data and experience are systematically integrated with external evidence.

Data to Knowledge

That knowledge is used to drive improvements that can change people’s lives and health.

Knowledge to Practice

As a result, patients get higher quality, safer, and more efficient care, and healthcare delivery organizations become better places to work.

The LHS E-STAR Scholars Program at UCSF is training a diverse group of individuals through collaboration, mentorship and teaching. The Center has partnered with UCSF and affiliated health systems to enhance existing quality/operations improvement projects, seeking to make things better for their patients and staff.

The co-production of LHS research with health systems fosters high-level sponsorship and mentorship around real-time healthcare delivery challenges, helping to overcome any barriers that may arise.

The scholars participate in a robust curriculum that not only includes research courses, but also specialized training in patient and stakeholder engagement, professional development, project implementation and a two-day LHS workshop.

This multifaceted approach supports scholars beyond project completion to enduring LHS careers.
