Co-development of embedded LHS research projects with health systems is central to the E-STAR Center model.

E-STAR Center Health System Liaisons work with quality and operations improvement leaders within each health system to identify high-priority, established improvement initiatives. This provides an optimal opportunity for E-STAR Scholars to apply LHS research principles and skills to enhance the goals of each initiative. Prospective E-STAR Scholars apply with a health system sponsor and project for 1-year fellowships that include courses, works-in-progress seminars, mentorship and career development.

UCSF Health

The UCSF Health clinical enterprise is partnered with the LHS E-STAR Center. This includes the following patient care delivery entities: 

  • Adult Hospital Services (Helen Diller Medical Center at Parnassus)
  • Mt Zion Hospital
  • Mission Bay (Women’s and Cancer Hospital)
  • Benioff Children’s Hospitals (San Francisco and Oakland)
  • Langley Porter Psychiatric Hospital and Clinics
  • Helen Diller Comprehensive Cancer Center
  • UCSF Ambulatory Care Services

These care delivery entities are staffed by UCSF School of Medicine appointed physicians (3000+) belonging to the UCSF Faculty Practice, along with nurses and other staff (15,000+) managed by UCSF Health. UCSF Health manages 1290 licensed hospital beds across all hospitals and provides care for over 35,000 hospitalized patients, and 2.5 million outpatient visits.

San Francisco Department of Public Health

The mission of the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) is to protect and promote the health and well-being for all San Francisco residents.

Annually, SFHN provides care to 12,000+ hospitalized patients and over 750,000 outpatient encounters. SFDPH consists of two main care delivery components, both of which partner with the E-STAR program:

(1) The San Francisco Health Network (SFHN) is the integrated public health care delivery system that consists of the

  • Zuckerberg General Hospital and Trauma Center
  • Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center (a skilled nursing facility)
  • Behavioral Health, and Ambulatory care (Jail Health, Maternal and Child Health
  • Primary Care, Whole-person Integrated Care).

(2) The Population Health Division creates sustainable environments and resilient communities across San Francisco by addressing public health concerns, including consumer safety, health promotion, disease/injury prevention, and disaster and emergency response.

San Francisco VA Health Care System

The San Francisco VA Health Care System is a comprehensive network that provides health services to Veterans through the San Francisco VA Medical Center. 

There are eight community-based outpatient clinics located in:

  • Oakland
  • Santa Rosa North & South
  • Eureka
  • Ukiah
  • Clearlake
  • San Bruno
  • Downtown San Francisco

It has a long history of conducting cutting edge research, establishing innovative medical programs, and providing compassionate care to Veterans. The Medical Center has 111 beds and a 120-bed Community Living Center and has been affiliated with the UCSF School of Medicine for over 60 years as a primary research and teaching partner. The SFVA has several National Centers of Excellence in the areas of Epilepsy Treatment, Cardiac Surgery, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, HIV, and Renal Dialysis and hosts the largest funded research program across the VA with over $91 million dollars in research expenditures.
